Keyboard shortcuts are the fastest way to take screenshots on Windows. But did you know there are over 10 different key combinations? Here’s every shortcut you need, from built-in Windows combos to professional tool hotkeys.
Built-in Windows Screenshot Shortcuts
Print Screen (PrtScn)
Captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. You then need to paste it (Ctrl+V) into an image editor or document. No file is saved automatically.
Win + Print Screen
Captures the entire screen and automatically saves as a PNG file to Pictures\Screenshots. The screen briefly dims to confirm the capture.
Alt + Print Screen
Captures only the active window and copies to clipboard. Perfect for grabbing a single application window without the taskbar or other windows.
Win + Shift + S
Opens the Snip & Sketch overlay where you can select a region, window, or fullscreen. The capture goes to clipboard and shows a notification to annotate.
Win + G (Game Bar)
Opens the Xbox Game Bar. Press Win + Alt + Print Screen to take a screenshot during gaming. Saves to Videos\Captures.
